President Donald Trump met with Puerto Rican leaders on Tuesday to discuss the federal response to Hurricane Maria, which has devastated the island and left at least 16 people dead.
But the cameras were paying extra attention when Trump finally met face to face with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, who has been highly critical of the Trump administration’s handling of the crisis.
As Trump and Cruz shook hands, the president can be heard saying, “How are you?” That’s when the mayor is heard telling the president, “This is not about politics.”
Trump was seemingly not interested in having that discussion at all and completely ignored the remark and directed his attention to the rest of the room. Watch that slightly awkward exchange below:
Cruz continued to bash Trump after the meeting, appearing on CNN to label the president “miscommunicator in chief.”
“I think his staff understands now, and they have all the data they need. But I would hope that the president of the United States stops spouting out comments that really hurt the people of Puerto Rico,” she told CNN. “Rather than commander in chief, he sort of becomes miscommunicator in chief.”
